Need to know: What is the difference between a spinal injury and a spinal cord injury?

In simple terms, a spinal injury may result from damage to the vertebrae, ligaments or disks of the spinal column or to the spinal cord itself. In a spinal cord injury some degree of paralysis or restriction of movement or feeling will be present, below the point of injury.

While spinal cord injuries can be severe and have far reaching consequences, distinguishing between spinal injuries and spinal cord injuries is necessary to determine the care that may be needed in the long term. Both can be the result of a trauma and both are worth pursuing if there is a negligent party.
